I haven’t gone anywhere
On the contrary though I have.
Onward and upward in the art community. Increased interest in my work that’s boosting sales. More commission work requests, including one for a piece to be displayed in a citywide art project. An Honorable Mention award at a local art exhibit that I’ve been very lucky to be a part of this summer. And a much needed change in the day job area. Yeah Scrape’s isn’t that big yet where I can sever ties to the 9-5 world but fingers crossed we get there soon.
Just wanted to toot my own horn on a project that I’ve recently completed that I’m pretty proud of. For the past several months I’ve been working on a display piece for a family member of mine who’s just graduated from high school and is headed into the armed forces with hopes of becoming a pilot. And what better part of the US arsenal to inspire one to do so than the good old Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II.
My first real attempt at stitch/weld sculpture. This project started out life as a few bars of rebar, gate spindles, hardware, and a couple spools of “0.32 wire. Countless hours of grinding and shaping went into this one. The base was cut from 1/8” plate, and when all was done the plane itself was powder coated Air Force Grey.
The thing weighs a ton but I’m pretty stoked about how it turned out. In the end, she and everyone that saw it at it’s unveiling just loved it. So I can’t finish this story without throwing a huge Thank You out there to Gary and Prudy for challenging me with this task and for your trust in letting me run with this one. A tough part with commission work is climbing into the imagination of your client and reading their mind on what they’re looking for. You left full artistic expression in my hands and it made this project so much more fun and so much less stressful and I thank you both again for that.
On to the next big one.
